  • Borno: President Confirms Killing of Brigadier General in Terrorist Kidnapping Incident

Maiduguri, Nigeria — The President of Nigeria has officially confirmed the killing of a Brigadier General during a terrorist kidnapping incident in Borno State, deepening national concern over the escalating wave of insurgent attacks in the Northeast.According to the Presidency, the senior military officer was leading a response team after reports emerged that terrorists attempted to kidnap civilians along a remote axis of Borno. During the engagement, the officer’s convoy came under heavy fire from gunmen believed to be linked to ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).Despite attempts by troops to repel the ambush, the Brigadier General sustained fatal injuries. Additional soldiers were also reported injured, though the exact number has not been released by military authorities. The President described the attack as “a painful reminder of the sacrifices our gallant officers make to protect the nation”, and vowed that those behind the killing would be tracked down and neutralized.Security analysts say the killing of such a high-ranking officer is a rare and serious blow to military morale, especially as counter-insurgency operations intensify in Borno.

Commentary / AnalysisThe incident underscores several growing concerns:1. Increase in Bold AttacksTerrorist groups in the region are becoming bolder, directly targeting senior military officers — a tactic meant to shake confidence within the military hierarchy.2. Vulnerability of Rural CorridorsThe attack occurred in a remote part of Borno, where insurgents often exploit weak communication signals and limited military presence.3. Pressure on Counter-Insurgency OperationsLosing a Brigadier General in active combat is extremely rare. It signals that insurgent groups may be regrouping or receiving new support.4. National AttentionThe President’s direct confirmation shows the gravity of the situation and the pressure on federal authorities to restore stability in Borno.

  • Boko Haram Strikes Gwoza LGA

In a tragic escalation of violence, suspected Boko Haram militants carried out a deadly ambush in the Gwoza Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, killing 12 people over a short period. The attack occurred across two sites: along Kirawa Road and in the Bokko Ghide community, situated within the Pulka District.

    Victims and Circumstances

According to the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, two of the deceased were members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The remaining ten victims were civilians — reportedly firewood scavengers who ventured into the bush to collect wood when they were ambushed.

Timta also confirmed that several other people sustained serious injuries during the attack and were evacuated to Maiduguri for treatment. The victims who died were buried according to their religious rites.

    Reaction from Local Leadership

Speaking on behalf of his community, the Emir of Gwoza expressed deep concern over the renewed violence. He warned that the resurgence of such attacks risks derailing ongoing efforts toward reconstruction, rehabilitation, and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region. Timta called on the government and military to intensify their efforts, emphasizing the need for more advanced military equipment and technological warfare to counter the sophistication of the insurgents. He also noted that the timing of the attack could further demoralize residents, many of whom were preparing to farm in the upcoming cropping season.

Call to ActionThe Emir has urgently appealed for:

Increased military support in the form of technology and modern equipment.

Enhanced intelligence sharing and ground patrols.

Additional protection for vulnerable rural communities, especially during farming and collection activities.

He stated that without significant intervention, continued attacks could reverse the gains made in resettling and rebuilding war-torn communities.
